Justine Henin-Hardenne will finish the year as the top-ranked player in women's tennis after beating Maria Sharapova 6-2, 7-5 (5) on Saturday in the semifinals of the WTA Championships.
Henin-Hardenne beat Sharapova for the third time in four meetings this year -- the Belgian's only loss coming in the U.S. Open final.
Henin-Hardenne, who had seven aces, had three service breaks in the first set while forcing Sharapova into 14 unforced errors. Henin-Hardenne converted her fourth break point in the eighth game of the second set to take a 5-3 lead when Sharapova hit a forehand into the net.
Sharapova rallied with her first break of the second set when Henin-Hardenne sent a forehand into the net. Both players then held serve to force the tiebreaker.
The Russian saved one match point at 6-4 in the tiebreaker, but Henin-Hardenne converted on her second try to give Sharapova only her second loss in 11 tiebreakers this year.
"I just didn't feel like myself today," Sharapova said. "I felt a little sluggish. I didn't feel like I was concentrating.
"You hope to find a way to break through that, and I felt like I was getting there at the end of the match, but I just couldn't put two or three good points together."
Sharapova finished the season with a career-high five titles, including her second Grand Slam title at the U.S. Open.
"I've had an amazing year, a very successful year, and I'll finish the highest I have in my career," Sharapova said. "You always think about what went wrong and what could have gone better, but I'm happy with the way I played and just look forward to what I can improve for next year."

Justine H-H was a lot better today than Maria. No doubt - byt Masha won 18 singles in a row, incl. US Open. Fantastic - and next year in april, she will stay at the top as no. # 1 in WTA´s ranking. |

I must announce myself again because of some bad comments. Justine has nothing in herself. I'd like to see her, if Maria had aces like in Zurich or Linz. Maria had the bad day, and that's the main reason of her fail. Maria for sure can serve 192,195,200 and even more kilometers per hour. With good training she can do it in 2007 and then we'll see that damn belgian dwarf and the rest of them. Maria, immortal Maria, love from Zoran from Prijedor. It was a terrible finish in the semi-fenals between J.H.H. Right now the fans only knew the last tournament, but Maria. You were the best tennis player from august and ontil now. Your semifinal between AnMo 6-0, 4-6, 6-0 and your US Open final with victory over Justine H-H. 6-4, 6-4 was the top result, you finally have waited for. So nothing loser here about the fans, except one stupid young boy! |

It was a very bad and unhappy ending for Maria. Three victorys in a row and then - down, finish and game for this year. Shame on you Miss Sharapova. If you had said no to Linz Tornement - you have been a lot hungry´er for WTA Championships in Madrid. Sad Songs.... |

The last match is the strongest, and Maria was a bad loser. If she had forgot Zürich Open and Linz Open, I´m sure, Maria should have won WTA´s championship like 2004 and US Open this year. Now she´s only came third - and it wasn´´t real bad. Henin and Mauresmo was in a class of their own. Sorre Masha. Set - game and gudbuy to 2006... |
